The difference can be so incredibly slight, it's just a matter of style most of the time, imho. Here's a case in point:

I'm going to take the 8 posters who get the most votes for "worst poster of the year" and the 16 posters who get the most votes for "poster of the year" and we'll do an elite 8 and a sweet 16 contest (they will have the same format as the 128 man contest except the number of votes you get in the nomination thread will determine your ranking).

It started with a thread where people nominate the posters of the year (these are the manual votes):
